The recent Pokemon Heisei History special says that the series takes place on a planet far away from Earth.

Since the planet they live on isn't Earth, all Pokemon characters are aliens

This, the first four regions were even based on actual places in the real world. It wasn't until Gen V that their map started becoming more loosely based on the actual place, but it's basically established that it takes place on the real world.

Yeah, I know, I just find them a bit different from the first few regions, while they were mostly an actual representation based on their knowledge of their country's geography, the others seem a bit more based from inspiration. Also, why does Kalo have a different name from France? I get that they rarely mention a country's name in the game, but I thought that they were mostly identical to their real life counterpart. I think they are partly trying to deviate the pokemon world from Earth.
