Ohmori told yesterday in Pokenchi that the theme of SS is "The strongest Pokémon".
I really hope that doesn't mean that the Armor rumours are true.

This is what I'm hoping for. If I recall, Gamefreak said in interviews that if there was a way to make Megas relevant again in a story or narrative sense, they would make new ones.

Well as OP said, the overall theme of Sword and Shield will be "the strongest Pokemon" which most likely means bringing out a Pokemon's max potential or whatever. The whole premise of Mega evolution is all about Pokemon "going beyond their limits". It fits, and it would make sense to see them return for this new theme.
Of course Gamefreak is Gamefreak, so seeing them return is sadly unlikely.

I will say on the other hand, that the Fug leak claimed that Gamefreak would be returning to a "focus on the potential of Pokemon" theme, and this just confirms it. Fug leak also mentioned Megas returning.

Megas aren't going to come back because they're not marketable enough anymore. The entire point of them was to be some crazy new gimmick that got people talking and eager to buy the Gen 6 games just to see it in action. Once people got used to them they were no longer fit for purpose, which is why they were dropped in Gen 7 in favour of Z-Moves, which in turn will be scrapped in Gen 8 in favour of something else.
This is how things work now; the spectacle comes first, everything else is an afterthought.

The clouds are right next to a town with a port. Also, the "leak" mentions farming fields, which the map has, but I guess that's not hard to predict.

Is there any precedence for this idea at all? Everyone thought the USM map had hidden areas under the clouds but there was literally nothing, and those clouds were huge compared to these piddly things.

Armor Evolution:

Uses a new held item called Armor, which increases a pokémon's base ATK, DEF, SpATK and SpDEF by +25 each. No changes to the pokémon's ability.
Every pokémon can hold the Armor, essentially giving every single pokémon a pseudo-Mega Evolution.
Same restriction as Megas, you can't use more than one Armor per battle.
You can, however, use both a Mega pokémon and another pokémon with Armor.

That's possible too, even though the Defense armor would make eviolite kind of useless for weaker pokémon (unless only fully-evolved mons can use it).

But I'm sure that if Armor evolution actually becomes a thing certain special snowflake pokémon will also have their own individual armors, kinda like Z-moves.

I hope megas return because it wasn't a bad mechanic and the only problem it had was that GF prioritized pupularity over balance.
Also the first VGC with megas was really good, MKanga didn't even make it to top 8 at world and there were a lot of different pokémon in the competition
