what about the UI so to speak of each Pokedex? I'd say that matters a lot more for playing the game.
For me, my favorites in that regard are by far FR/LG and HG/SS.

Sinnoh is the worst offender. The protruding button pads are ugly and awkward. Gen 2 Johto is also too convoluted. Why can't it just open regularly instead of being three different pieces? Kalos is too high-tech looking. It looks like something Colress would have instead of a kid on an adventure.

The Gen 4 Johtodex and Unovadex are both nice and simple designs. Gen 6 is a bit too futuristic and weird though. The Gen 6 Hoenndex is also nice both for the throwback and for being a fairly rugged and simple design.

It's like an old school flip PDA. Like a Sharp Wizard or the Casio B.O.S.S. I don't know if they still make those things in the age of cellphones though. Digimon's D-Terminal is also based on that style of PDA. Still it's probably one of the worst overall designs.

Any design that doesn't protect the screens is inherently bad.
Also the female Johto dex from Gen IV looks even more like a toy than the other ones, Unova did it better.
Sinnoh and Gen III Hoenn a best, Rotom and LGBT dex need to be incinerated.
