take for example the whole pokemon school scene. pokemon schools have been in the game since gen 2 but they've always been, for the most part, optional. if you were interested then you could go have a look and find out what's what. however in SM, it's not optional and it's considerably longer. they force you to go through all that hassle just to learn a couple of things that most players already know.
and that's just one example. the issue with SM is that it enforces so much stuff that seems excessive instead of maybe just encouraging the player to seek out things for themselves. if you find something cool that was in an optional area then it feels better than being forced into a certain area and being required to do a bunch of shit in order to progress
i mean the content by itself isnt necessarily bad, it's just that it's too forced and longwinded
