I have a weird ethical quandary about using pkhex.

When you click view, edit your Pokemon, and then set it in the place where your Pokemon was, is it still the same Pokemon considering the PID is the same?

Is it replacing the old Pokemon with a new one, or is it the same Pokemon just changed?

Is this what happens every time you save in game? If it is, would that mean that there’s technically nothing unethical about editing and setting?

I kinda had that feeling when I edited my Swampert from Sapphire in XY.

However, it's just data at the end of the day.

That's exactly what happens when you save or transfer your mons to another game or service like pokemon bank. It's just a copy of your original mon, not actually the original mon itself. Think of it like the Star Trek transporter.

So basically, it technically still is the same Pokemon, and it's not "unethical" since the same process occurs in the games themselves.

Well wouldn’t it still be the same Pokemon? Think of it this way:

>Pokemon A is unedited
>Copy save data, Pokemon A is now in your sd card folder and game cart, two different points in time
>You open up pkhex, view Pokemon A, and change its moves. Technically the Pokemon in the view section is Pokemon A being changed still.
>You set Pokemon A onto the game cart and save as though you went to a move tutor in game and saved the game
>The “new” updated Pokemon A then gets saved over the game A.
>It’s Pokemon A, just from a different point in time, the Pokemon A in the sd card is now the “past” Pokemon A

So really, its just a weird time displaces version of your same Pokemon since the PID is the same

Technically whenever you trade what's actually happening is that it's deleting the Pokemon in your game and cloning it in another game.

Yes but the PID, if legit, still carries on the essence of the Pokemon.

Manipulating the PID or overwriting it when saving is still tweaking the base essence of said mon, meaning its the same Pokemon in theory

pokemon are just 10101010101's. Moving them in-game causes the program to copy the data, so it's not the original 'DNA' of sorts. Even capturing it, it's not the original Pokémon you first encountered :)
