What would it take for a Monster Collecting game to rival Pokémon?
Should it focus on caring for and raising your creatures like Digimon? Should the battle system be more important than raising the creatures themselves?

You just won't be able to convert old nostalgia fags like me. We're a lost cause. Best thing would be to appeal to new generations, radically switch up the formula, and do things that have never been done before. You need to appeal to the zeitgeist of the now. Tap into that and you'll have a hit on your hands.

What do you mean "rival Pokemon"? Do you mean in terms of quality or success? The former has already been done, but the latter is almost impossible. Pokemon was a slightly above average JRPG that was initially successful, then kicked into overdrive because of Nintendo throwing shit tons of money at it to make it that way. Any would-be rival to Pokemon would need that kind of gigantic sugar daddy to succeed, and no one wants to compete with Nintendo on those grounds. Yokai Watch came to the closest to succeeding, but never caught on outside of Japan and screwed the pooch by over-saturating the market even more than Pokemon ever did.

At this point there's nothing you can do.
Pokemon is so huge and so ingrained into people's childhoods that literally any other monster collecting game will be immediately dubbed a clone of pokemon, even if the game actually came first like SMT.
The pokemon brand is an unstoppable juggernaut with an ocean of mindless drones that will buy literally anything with the pokemon name on it, ready to defend every single thing Game Freak does simply because it's pokemon.
The sooner you accept that it's a lost cause the better.

First, to have it rival it at all, you would need to have a library of mons that's already well recognized. You'd want something on par with Mario enemies or animals dressed as disney characters. Something that people would recognize and not just write off as a copy.

Secondly, focus the game more on choice. What party did you choose? What path do you want to take to the next goal? How do your partner mons change your approach? People will resonate more with the monsters if they feel like the one they caught let them go somewhere not as many people will see.

The battle system is still important to get right, but it doesn't need to be the focus. Just ensure it has a layer of depth, and that there are harder postgame challenges

Seconded, though add DQM2. Terry's Wonderland 3D actually got a port on mobile that adds more monsters, particularly from DQ11. Naturally we haven't gotten that, either.

It's never going to happen unless a company is willing to invest a shit load getting a new franchise off the ground like that. We'll probably never see anything like Pokemon was at its height of popularity because it has/had so much going for it. Yokai Watch was getting there, but in the end people forgot about it because the gaps between games were getting longer.

It's obvious no game will ever come close to the massive size of Pokémon. But in terms of being a good monster collecting game, even if for a niche audience. What would it take?

Just fucking copy the same battle, catching and breeding system. It's that simple, every single other game is utter trash at one of the three if not all of them.
Look at DQ for example, catching is fine, but battles are pretty much autobattles with the competitive being a complete shitfest because instead of an attempt of balance you get the powercreep formula and the grind is so real because of that.

Assuming you don't have to worry about designs or an established audience, the biggest thing I would say is to give the players a degree of freedom. Not full on OMG Open World freedom, but giving them decisions that matter. If you've got a Mon with fire attacks, heading through a wet swamp of a forest full of bugs should be a meaningful choice. The swamp might be harder, but might have stronger creatures to round out your team with

It varies from person to person honestly. Some people just want a pure monster collecting game, some people like hunting for rarer versions of monsters, and some people like a good story.
Like, all the games posted here could be perfect niche for you, but they could also be the opposite of what you're looking for from a monster collecting game.

Absolutely agreed. If only more attention were paid to the DQMJ series, I honestly believe it had (and maybe still has) the chance to go big - especially in the wake of Game Freak shitting on everything Pokemon.
