>>42104599Well in totality from a gameplay perspective both b/w1 and sw/sh are functional pokemon games, with sw/sh being a little bit superior if you're a competitive minded player.
The flaws come in when you consider what they represent as products. Gen 5 was a polarizing soft reboot with pokemon designs that are kinda just bad versions of kanto mons. It tries to tell a story that is epic in scope, but also comes with trademark bad pokemon dialogue, rushed character development, nonsensical antagonists, Ghetsis invalidating the main theme of the game, the E4 basically just exists and basically do nothing the entire game which was weird. It had a good idea for a story but failed to deliver on all the major story beats.
SW/SH is much the same way with the dexcut, and lackluster content. There was a lot of innovation with dynamax, the removal of the E4 in favor of a tournament format, but like SW/SH they just can't write well. SW/SH wanted to be a game focused on a cast of characters that developed through the story, but ultimately failed for the same exact reasons b/w1 did. Marnie/Bede/Hop were too rushed. It tried to be a shounen but failed.
