Anyone seen this pikachu art before? Only source I can find for it comes from a Japanese twitter user who doesn't know about it either. It looks like 1997/98 Sugimori art and I gotta believe there's info about somewhere.

Somehow, even though it looks a lot like Sugimori artwork, it doesn't really look like any other Pikachu by Sugimori... I think it has to do with the silhouette, since Sugimori seems to draw Pikachu with the head separated from the body, even back then.

could be other author... Pikachu used to look way too different depending on who was drawing, esp. Atsuko Nishida. The picture seems to be sourced from a print, though.

There’s probably loads of kino art from the Game Freak webpage lost to time.
