If you were a good and kind person in your past life, showing true repentance for being a non-believer sounds plausible.
The bible tells how Jesus gave the keys to the kingdom to St. Peter, even though he denied him and then repented for it. If any, Peter would be the most compassionate apostle towards non-believers, since he was forgiven after doing the same.
