Just noticed this: Cloyster doesn't close its shell all the way. A Bisharp or Excadrill could still stab it in the face.

Dragon type was tacked on late in Gen 1's development to have a "final boss" type that's resistant to all of the starter types

Ice was tacked on to give Dragon a weakness

Ice is one of the traditional JRPG elements, along with "Earth" and "Poison". Its inclusion had nothing to do with the Dragon type, and everything to do with GameFreak trying to get more triangles by splitting those elements into Rock/Ground, Water/Ice and Grass/Poison.

Traditional JRPG Elements are Earth, Fire, Water, Wind/Wood. Sometimes Lightning, Light/Holy, Darkness, and/or Metal are included. Poison is almost never its own element but a status ailment.
