The battle system is fine, but animations should aim to make it look dynamic, not even more static, which is how it feels when a pokemon doesn't do shit in its idle animation
The place where the most improvement is needed is exploration and movement. The current 3D games could all be 2D, they're not taking advantage of it at all. The world feels dead, it's not fun to explore, and there's nothing interesting to find in it. This was fine for a gameboy game, but the fact that the exploration hasn't changed at all is fucking terrible
Characters should get more time to shine : you can keep the story straightforward if what happens in it is fun and if the characters are memorable.
And finally it needs more side content. There basically isn't anything to do except following the linear story in pokemon games. This ties back to improving exploration, but the story should just be a part of it, let us experience the world in other ways than just walking and battling
