I'm a genwunner and I don't remember Charizard being so overwhelmingly popular. That's almost a 9:1 ratio over Venusaur and 9:2 over Blastoise.

Was blastoise always the number 2 pick back then? I never heard anyone talk about picking blastoise, I’ve seen so many people say they picked bulbasaur and that it’s “underrated”, in fact more people than those who picked charmander

I’m more impressed that Decidueye managed outranked Incinaroar in popularity considering how Gamefreak/TPC was shilling Incinaroar quite a bit during gen 7 and kept shoving Decidueye out of the spotlight and was barely showcased at all in marketing baring Pokken.

Blaziken, Cinderace were also shilled buy Cinderace is barely more popular than Inteleon, while Blaziken is less popular than Sceptile

No, those are the ratings they got by region. For instance, Infernape was rated 5th while Lucario was rated 1st when it comes to the most voted Sinnoh pokemon.

Yeah it was, because it was the cover mascot. If you wanted to be a chad you'd pick Venusaur, though.
Charizard didn't get more popular because of the anime. It was disobedient for most of the show. But in the card game, everyone wanted the 1st edition Charizard because it had 120 HP and a 100 damage attacking move.

Considering the fact that they shilled Scorbunny pretty hard so far, Cinderace got two really powerful signature moves and it essentially being a rip off of greninja with its general stat distribution and ability (which is literally a clone of protein), it’s kinda telling that Cinderace is the starter that its the shilled starter even if it’s not directly shilled yet.
