You can still receive Zeraora as long as you transfer a Pokemon to Home before July 6th at 4:49PM PDT. Do note that you need to have access to the smartphone version of the game to claim the gift

You're given the option to nickname zeraora when you receive it, but since it's a fateful encounter with HOME as the OT you can't change it afterwards

Generally you can't. The only exception is when you get a mystery gift pokemon where you're not the OT, but you can only nickname it the first time you get it.

Not the anon in question but I don't make it a habit to download software that is going to monitor my activity and take up memory just so I can use it once to get a pokemon that I don't plan on using.

Why is the home account necessary in the first place? Couldn't they just distribute it through mystery gift?

It’s obviously a marketing plan to try to get people to download / potentially use HOME. It’s a small price to pay for shiny Zeraora, all three Galar starters with HA, and 1/3 Kanto starters with HA, imo. But you do you.
