I think that might go to Links Awakening on the Switch, but Gen5 was very impressive when it wanted to be. I hate to see people knock it's graphics now, because at the time it really pushed the limits of what the DS could

A smear is a quick "transition" frame between two polished ones. It's the same here, taking a screenshot of the sprite mid animation when it's changing position, something that when looking at the actually sprite goes by so fast is barely visible, so yes, it is akin a smear, and it is cherry picking.

Nope that's an inbetween. Smears can be in betweens but not all inbetweens are smears. As far as I know the games have never used smears, here is one from the anime though.

It's an analogy, not being literal, can't you read? I'm not saying the in-between of sprites ARE smears, just that they're akin and complaining about a sprite mid transition is like judging a cartoon's quality for its smears.
