So this is what people mean when they say that new games are too linear? Adding in a cave 5 feet to the right of the mandatory path with a 100% encounter rate for a insta-win to the gym leader is a "reward foe exploring"

Thats good design though.

The only issue is that the gym itself is too weak.

The game is simply giving you tools to fairly challenge the gyms.
Every game in the series does this, sometimes you people forget these games are designed with young people in mind.

Yeah, but I also don't complain that new games are too linear. Because Pokémon has always been linear, and the very few times it wasn't, it fucked itself over by forcing a horrible level curve.

Do people actually catch Pokémon to counter upcoming battles? I always just pre-plan a team of 6 I want to use and figure out battles with whatever I happen to have at the time. So if I wanted a Cubone in RBY I wouldn't have a ground type yet because I'd only get one in Lavender.

nobody tells you to go to digglet cave and get a digglet because digglet is strong against Surge
in modern pokemon games, you would arrive to vermilion, npc comes out of nowhere and tells you the gym has electric types, they are weak to ground types and digglet can be found next door

That’s not even the half of it, if you fight every trainer available up to this point including the ones on SS Anne and in route 11, which isn’t remotely unrealistic and doesn’t require sequence breaking, then you’re looking at being around level 25-30 depending on how many Pokémon you’ve caught already. It’s fucking pathetic, Surge could have erikas levels and it wouldn’t be even remotely broken
