As a kid, did you bother making a balanced team for the main journey or did you just curbstomp everything with an overleveled starter?

I exclusively used Water+Fire+Grass+Flying+Electric+ one misc type for my teams. Guess I was just rping as Ash or some shit

On my first run of Red I was always trying every new Pokémon I found so I ended up horribly underleveled
In Yellow I tried emulating Ash's team
It was only in emerald that I tried soloing the same with Mudkip

I definitely had a team in mind while playing through the game. My template was a Fire/Water/Grass core, including the starter, a Flying type (usually an early game bird), a pseudolegendary and a dark/ghost type. I always imagined my own team being the next champion team, so I wanted to have good type balance.

Overleveled started.
Don't blame ME for this. It was gamefreak being unable to design the game properly so that the "You can't win with just one strong Pokémon" lie the games kept repeating could become the truth.

I just wanted to prove them wrong and easily did.
It's not my fault Game Fuck is too incompetent to balance the games properly.
If you have to set yourself artificial restrictions in order to have even the slightest hint of a challenge, the game is to blame.

This later became an autism of mine when playing games (started in Gen 2) and will build my team with :

fire
water
grass
usually the next 3 types are in the air. Not having to account for HMs gives me more freedom nowadays and I dont need a flying type anymore.

usually the other 3 are ground, electric and fairy or steel.

Specifically as a kid? I just power leveled my starter, both because I didn't really have any other favorites, and because it was always the strongest thing I had at the time without putting in any extra effort (until I stumbled across Zapdos)

Closest I came was using the Missingno glitch at the end of Red to get a level 100 Venusaur and sweep of the League. That was decidedly not fun so I never did it again.

Until Sidney's Cacturne one-shots you because little you never strayed off the beaten path to look for ice moves. Honestly as far as sentiments like >>45737312 are concerned we need more would-be "hard" starter counters like that.

I used the starter, whatever bird is on the first route, whatever the rat/racoon/whatever was on the first route, a water type, a fighting type and a legendary. I was shit at pokemon lol

I curbstomped with a starter and I always picked the water starter. My logic was that they can use an ice move to beat grass and water beats fire so they're the best. Type coverage reigns supreme. So I had Blastoise with Hydro Pump, Blizzard, Earthquake and some stupid move, then in Gen 2 I had Feraligatr with the same set except with Crunch as the last move. The one exception was when I felt like making a new save file with Meganium. I ended up using Raticate with it and it performed better than Meganium even though I did retarded shit like give it a bunch of special moves.

In Blue, I used an extremely random team. I didnt overlevel my Venusaur but it was the highest level, 58 or such at the E4 and I still had a level 25 Pikachu on my team because of course you need to have a Pikachu on your team. But when I caught Mewtwo, I replaced everything except Venusaur and Zapdos on my team with pokemon you find in that cave, like Chansey and Rhydon.
Funnily enough, between the games I seemingly just learned how to play the games out of nowhere since in Gold, I actually built a type-balanced team and kept everyone at similar levels.

I only levelled the starter during the story and then would train up Pokemon I liked post-game. I thought non-starter Pokemon must be too weak to use because literally everyone I knew who played Pokemon just used their starter only.
I only started using full teams half way through gen 3.

I played Crystal first. I exclusively used my starter in battle for the most part. A couple times I would play up to Mahogany town or the E4 and restart my save and try a different starter. Then I discovered that Lance is much easier with Suicune, so I switched to using legendaries as soon as they became available.

Of course I overleveled my starter. Recently I've been playing Silver for the first time and I tried to recreate the "kid" mindset : whenever I found a cool looking Pokémon, one that I didn't anything about but made me think "it looks cool and powerful", I kept it in my team. The only rule I had was 2gn Pokémon only because I've played a lot of Leaf green recently.
I ended up with a good defensive Meganium, an overpowered Ampharos and far too many HM bitches
