I thought Sword and Shield's music would be the one thing I would actually like about it, but I was shocked when it didn't sound great. That's not to say it has no good tracks, but so many of them just don't come together. They feel disjointed or like the reverb is way too high as if they're being played in a giant cylinder, or the sound font completely destroys the song. Like who the hell uses wolf howls as individual notes? It sounds like one of those cheap keyboards where you can change the sound font to something silly.

I enjoy Bede's encounter theme, but his actual battle theme is a mess that feels like it changes tempo out of nowhere and shoves in a hodgepodge of melodies that don't say anything about the character. I do like the Gym Leader battle theme, though the crowd chanting is a little too artificial. The Slumbering Weald theme is good until the wolf howling.

why are only some of the channels detuned
i'd get it if they detuned everything, but only the pulse channels are detuned (and they're detuned four times as much as they need to be to avoid clipping)

, I thought that the music would be the saving grace for me but Sword and Shield just have the absolute shittiest pokemon OST. The only song that doesn't make me want to pop my eardrums is the Battle Tower theme, and that one wasn't even made by GameFreak.
I don't understand how they went from some of the most pleasant songs (I still sometimes find myself humming the Eterna City song even though I haven't played a Sinnoh game in a decade) to what we have now

I'm saying it sounds good, to be clear, but what I will say is that I don't really think it was meant to.
It's supposed to be jarring because you're at low health so in a way it contributes to the sense of urgency

I like it. Like I understand what people don't like about it, but to me it feels like a very ambitious track for a Game Boy game. It has a very high pressure to it, giving it a feeling that only a den of dragons could have. It's kind of an eastern dragon sort of feeling, but not that peaceful mystical stuff you hear in Breath of the Wild, but like you're in this new world where things could be dangerous.

I think it's interesting that Game Freak tried doing context-sensitive music in BW. When people first learned that the music changes at red HP, everyone thought it was pretty cool. But I think the track is more harmful than good, as it completely overwrites the battle theme, whether that's a Gym Leader battle, final N battle, Ghetsis battle, or Champion battle. It can totally ruin the "narrative" of the battle. Like let's say you're going to win in the next turn. The low HP theme just does not work then. It just abruptly ends upon winning. Low HP does not always mean the battle is going bad for you, it means the Pokémon you're using is close to fainting. I know a number of people don't like the beeping when you're low on health, but I think it is important that the player feels a sense of audio urgency. I'm not totally a fan of the first few beeps and then silence. What should happen is an ambient quiet pulsing sound that doesn't noticeably overwrite the track. Start off with a few beeps, then have it fade into that quiet ba-dum, ba-dum, ba-dum... as the red health bar slowly pulses in time to it.

Motostoke actually sounds like it has Pokémon music in the melody, but it's bogged down by so much garbage that doesn't actually contribute to the melody.

This. Might as well just post the entire damn soundtrack. SWSH by far has the worst OST of all the games. Music was literally the one remaining thing I could always look forward to in Pokemon games, and this game shat all over that.
