What do you mean by dynamic rivals? SwSh had 3 rivals, Hop, Bede, and Marnie.

they had a little bit going between Hop and Bede, but yeah they kinda drop it since his arc is more intertwined with you, and it's kind of a shame Hop never really gets a chance to pay him back

I know the game continues if you manage to lose to Hop in the first two battles, and he even has special dialogue acknowledging his winning streak vs you. Every battle after you get your endorsement from Leon though is a roadblock until you win

I'm playing Sun for the first-time and besides the cutscenes it's really not that bad. I actually like Hau and he seems like a chill dude. Beat the first trial and I really don't see what all the fuss was about gen 7. Does it get worse from here?

I'm a gen 3 kid and loathed the move to 3D but ahloa seems pretty comfy desu

The inly part that is really railroaded is Mele mele and the story's climax at the end of Ula Ula. From the end of the first island to the start of the 3rd you mostly just go from trial to trial with occasional cutscenes.
