How would you categorize ME, Z-moves and Dynamax? I would call them generational gimmicks. Gimmicks that are used primarily in their debut generation and then swept aside in the post-game or not included at all in the next generation.

ME for me is more akin to the current implementation of regional forms than anything else. They only gave them to older Pokemon to make them relevant again. I don't particularly like them but it's nice that they can be balanced on a whim like they did with Kang.

This one was probably the first "generational gimmick" except I've seen the term regional gimmick lately that fits it more since it's never been used outside of Alola. It's clear they were just trying to compete with the Yokai Watch which is why it looks so similar and the poses are the same as those seen in YW.
>Dynamax
A derivative of Z-Moves. They thought adding gimmicks that can only be used in one specific region for <reasons> was a cool idea to make newer regions more memorable, so they just expanded on Z-Moves and integrated raids from GO to give it some more appeal.

They're all gimmicks. Any other claim is just trying to seperate megas from the ithers because they're hoping denial will make their gimmick more important.
