It lacks direction. Anything with vague undefined powers is lumped into Psychic, resulting in a lack of overall thematic identity. Psychic Type never decides if it wants to be sci-fi or paranormal or magic or etc. It's all over the place.

They fucked up fairy, they should have focused on making mystic stuff fairy and more scifi oriented stuff psychic but they were too focused on literally two moves in the game and fucked up the whole typing instead of just fixing the moves.

It was conceived back when ESP spoonbending shit is popular. Nowadays it's as relevant as spy and kung fu films, so nuPsychics are either girlymons that fires off purple energy beams (Fairy would be the same but with pink energy beams) or really creepy ugly shit.

Really you could put all the Fairy and Psychic mons in a pile, and then reseperate them into two new types like "ESP and Mystic".
In fact there are several types that tread on each other, often gameplay wise too. Rock and Ground are thematically so close you could merge them into a single "Earth" type and every single one would fit, and they have extremely similar ypematchups and stat distributions already. Similarly you could merge Dark and Ghost, and split up most of the normals into other types.
