Its a fine line between being mature enough to not seem like its completely made for kids while not being so mature it seems out of place and becomes laughable.
So I don't really think it could be done well although the stories could definitely be improved with better characters and more interesting scenario direction. The PMD games do both ok characters are filled with personality and have relationships with others, however they don't really develop over the course of the story. The events that unfold throughout the story are mostly entertaining and the protagonist is usually frequently in danger making the overalls stakes feel greater.
Still those games aren't perfect the writing is pretty mediocre.
