Tbh it's kind of hard to gauge just how competent Ash is because he refuses to go full on smurf and use his older Mon nowadays outside of specific requests or circumstances like visiting Oak's lab and something goes down. If Ash were using only his strongest mons he'd probably at least be on the upper end of the Red spectrum, but the kid battles with his heart rather than his brain, for better or worse

Ash fight with new Pokemon because it shows off Pokemon from newer games, no other reason. It's a toy commercial, nothing else could be expected.

A similar looking character also named Ash takes a trip to Unova and Kalos.
