Why do people want "edgy" rivals everytime new games come around? Would you rather have a rival that's unique in character? Like getting shit-talked the whole game sounds boring and repetitive...

People feel more invested when they actually want to battle. Turns out it's easier to achieve that by making the character kind of a prick than by making them super friendly and pitiable. GF's apparent solution is to make multiple rivals with different attitudes, which is probably the best solution. Imo they got it right the very first time and the next best thing would be a girl version. Gimme tomboy rival, dammit.
