On the ladder, losing because of bad confusion RNG is no big deal, because as long as you win more than you lose, you'll keep climbing up the ladder.
But you need to understand that tournament players hold a ton of sway in the Smogon community, and one unlucky loss can mean losing an entire tournament.
This is also why they have such a strong stall preference. Not only does stall focus on playing safe and trying to not lose more than trying to win, but longer matches reward consistently good play rather than one turn completely turning the match around with no input from the players.
