every time i've played a pokemon game i've spent the least time with the first stage. it usually eveolves by the second gym.

In my experience you typically stick with the first stage evo for awhile since its the Pokemon you get right at the begining and Pokemon games always start out super slow with forced battles and fetch quests and introductory text/tutorials.etc and by the time you get to their middle evo the pacing has picked up and you breeze through it.
