RBY pushed the OG GB hardware - there isn't much that offers more graphically than Yellow until GS comes along - and Crystal won't even run on the OG GB, needing the GBColor.
FRLG look pretty lazy by comparison, relative to what the GBA was capable of at the time.
Because sprites are timeless, you've got (in 2022) one boundary-pushing game (Yellow) and some lazy cash grab games (FRLG) for your Gen. I pet projects.

There's nothing more I can say, really. I'm not nostalgiafagging either since I never bothered with Red until after USUM and had a lot of fun with it, but FRLG remains the only games in the series I haven't beat just because of how sleep inducing they were to me.

I played Red on release. It was one of the best experiences ever on a videogame. All of the shit people complain now wasn't really a issue when playing it. It was and is fun as fuck.
I played FRLG decades later. It was fun but outside of graphics it didn't see like a huge improvement. Far from it. It was not as fun.
Played Red again later. Same fun as ever.
You can say that I'm old or is nostalgia but there is something about the first release that later versions can't reproduce.

FRLG has a degree of soullessness to it. From ignoring Murkrow/Houndour being Kanto native despite having no Dark Types to barring off mainstay features like breeding and cross-gen evos.
They're still great games and probably the definitive Kanto experience, but as remakes they're everything wrong with the series mostly for being the one to start "Muh 151" autism.

Nope, even Crystal was lazy as shit compared to other GBC titles. Games like Legend of the River King, Final Fantasy Legends III/IV, DK Country, Lufia the Legend Returns, Warioland 3, etc... all these mog Pokémon Crystal without a sweat, to the point that you have to resort to post """""SOVL"""""" static fanart to fix the shit it was.

I like RBY more because I think the glitches are really neat. Having things like arbitary code execution or even just the little things like the Cinnabar Island name storage glitch people use to get Missingno. end up making the game a little more fun even if it's not the intended way to play the game. It's pretty similar to how some people still really like Skyrim, I think.

RBY and GSC pushed jackshit, it was just the dex filling the cartridge data limit, nothing more. The visuals were still primitive and fell in comparison to other games at the time.

I like both but prefer the originals.
1. Mew glitch allows me to get any Pokémon without trading.
2. The sprite art has more personality.
3. The broken mechanics are fun. Such as speed = crits, hyper beam if KO doesn’t have to recharge, razor leaf always crits etc.
4. On a casual playthrough natures are more annoying because most of the time you won’t get what you want.

RBY and GSC didn't really push anything. They were pretty generic in terms of looks and music and mechanics, but it was that simplicity that made them easy for people to understand and wrap their heads around. FRLG and RSE all came out during a time period when SO MUCH MORE was fucking possible and they looked the way they did unapologetically. They were remakes of a GB game that looked like they could've been GB games themselves.

As an good example of GBA RPGs from the time: Sword of Mana came out months before Ruby and Sapphire. It was an ongoing series from years prior and wasn't as popular as Pokemon, but still had a dedicated fan base. This screen shot is from a random part of the game, it isn't a bull shot. It all looks this good, all the time.

Ruby and Sapphire couldn't even do a day night cycle anymore. GF was fucking hilariously out of their element the moment the games left the original Gameboy. But like I said, even those games were somewhat mediocre. Gen 1 and Gen 2 both required Miyamaoto and Iwata's help to even make them work. Iwata wasn't the head of Nintendo at the time and wasn't required to do anything to help them, he just wanted to and wound up fixing Gen 2 for them. After Gen 2, they were hilariously unequipped all over again.

I didn't say it was bad, I said it was generic. Everyone knows Masuda reused all his old stuff continually anyway, though. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of the songs from GSC came from fucking Pulseman and no one noticed because almost no one has ever played Game Freaks Sega exclusive Megaman knockoff that they're still so proud of they retroactively turned a gen 4 Pokemon into their own fucking Mickey Mouse to try and suck its dick over, retroactively. Never mind that Pulseman was only ever rereleased once because there's always the chance that Capcom might sue them into the ground for it.
I've been mad about Rotom lately and I found a spot to vent, sorry.
