Too many cutscenes, Lillie shilling, railroading, daytime is flipped as night time so some encounters you'll have to wait until nighttime. Also it borrows heavily from Yokai Watch, which was the main competitor at the time.

That's one of my favorite things about it honestly. It's very narrative driven and incredibly upbeat and adventurous. People who hate Lillie for whatever reason find it to be a slog, and I'll admit even though I really enjoyed it that it's one of the Pokemon games I only ever played through one time.

It's a fun game. Take your time, look for side content, it will feel railroaded if you just rush the story.
For that reason, I reccomend using Nuzlocke catching rules in a first Alola playthrough. Catch 1 pokemon in each area. That way, you'll have to look for the optional exploration areas if you want more encounters.
