There aren't going to be a lot of people on this board who were alive when it was 1996 OP. I myself was four for a good chunk of it. I was aware of Broderbund's 'The Playroom', Myst (b/c of my parents), and vaguely cognizant of Prince of Persia, though my dad told me it was an Aladdin game to make me stop asking questions. I didn't know what Nintendo was then.

No, I was 2 years old and just getting into real pc gaming with Doom thanks to my dad not thinking I'd try his games and, if I did, assuming I'd get stuck immediately and decide they were boring and never want to play them again before I ran into anything too bad. He was wrong and I ended up playing mostly old-school fps games until the ps2 came out. Once Pokemon officially launched in the west I was hooked on the anime and tcg and WANTED to play the video games, but other than a bit of Snap and Stadium at a friends house I didn't have the chance until Crystal.

Yeah, right here. It was a big deal for about a year and then nobody cared as much, and eventually Magic and Yu-Gi-Oh took over. Much later, the launch of WoW had the same vibe.

I think the general recollection of pokemania is greatly exaggerated, or those people just had nothing else going on in their lives.

Alright then, no, not in 96.
I didn't have any knowledge of the game's existence until summer of 97 when, during a sleepover, I noticed our resident taiwanese kid had a green cart with that label buried among all his other japanese GB games. I paid it no mind and nobody really looked since he always had that pile of games and it always looked about the same, and apparently he already played through and was done with it. I'd say that's still zero awareness right there.

BUT the only reason I remember seeing it then is because he brought it up when we all got our copies near release after seeing it played by other kids at school, like he enjoyed rubbing it in our faces that he already played "the superior version", but he never wanted to do the trading thing. I forget why.

I did. I still have first release cards. The games caught on kinda slow. Don't believe the everyone was playing it bs. It really didn't get popular with non nerds until yellow came out. Even then it was still niche. I got red the first day it hit stores. I was in 3rd grade. My buddy and I were ranked in competitive for a bit. I was top 10 in the midwest in link battles and he was the runner up for tcg. There weren't age groups back then. We were playing adults and kids. Back then the events were tiny. Most of the events took place in comic book shops and movie stores.

It's weird how your elementary school had cliques already when kids that age can barely tell the difference between boys and girls except by their clothes. In mine, everyone brought toys to school, and gameboys were common as dirt without any of the nerd stigma. Sucks to have your childhood lol

i remember renting firered at a videoclub and the first movie a lot of times
desu games for me weren't too relevant until 4th gen, I'd prefer playing ps1/2 or minish cap on the GBA

First time I heard about Pokemon was like 1998 when there was advertisement of Pokemon Stadium. My 6yo brain was immediately hooked on idea of cool-ass creatures fighting, even if I did not understand shit from it.

No I was made aware of its existence in 1999 when the anime replaced Dragon Ball Z during my weekends morning cartoons. They already replaced Saint Seiya with Cardcaptor Sakura. I was furious to see my edgy anime replaced by what I though was childish garbage.
Then suddenly everyone at school started playing Pokemon, the playgrounds were full of kids with their gameboys and link cables. Everyone was talking about it, boys and girls. "Can I evolve my Haunter ?" "Come see how to do the glitch city!" "Don't get a Missingno, it'll corrupt your save" "Guyz I know what is hidden in the truck!", etc.
One or two week later I was absorbed by the Pokemania too.

First GB emulator that was able to play commercial games was VGG (Virtual Gameboy) released firstly on unknown platform in 1995 and then ported to PC in 1995 or 96. It's totally plausible that someone was emulating Pokemon so early, even if it was limited just to handful of people.

Pokemon started to get big in fall of 1998 where I was. I was in the 6th grade at the time. It started with people bringing the cards to school, and then that spiraled into the video game. One kid even had a Japanese Game Boy and "Pokemon 2" in, but we couldn't read or understand anything.

Yeah, in general I think most of the anons here missed the point + significance of the year mentioned because I don't think OP was asking "were you alive/aware of Pokemon when Pokemania was big in your country" (which probably a decent amount of people here were, ex. I was a little kid then) but instead meant "were you aware of Pokemon when it was still only a thing in Japan" (which is still possible, but would require those anons to be pretty old to have followed news about it at the time or emulated the games, or, if they're comparatively young, to have circumstances that weren't universal, like living overseas in 1996 or having family in Japan, or actually being a Japanese citizen I guess).
