Adding to this, many fangames or ROMhacks are also essentially open source, but Shittendo still bothers to bully them.

Fangames and romhacks mostly get "bothered" because their creators advertise the fact that they're making it extremely loudly all over the internet long before they release anything.

Fan projects that STAY underground fan projects instead of becoming secondary jobs fueled by donations and patreonbux don't get bothered.

Showdown is like what, 15k people max and it's never fucking shilled anywhere. Smogon might be retarded but they're also a small niche microcommunity that isnt even 1% of the overall fanbase

This has always been how the doujin scene works in Japan. It's commonly understood that as long as you keep to yourself, just promote your work within underground fan circles and do shit as a fan instead of for profit, the rightsholders will pretend they never see you. Westfags go so absurdly against this gentleman's agreement the rightsholders have every right to just see them as the for-profit pirates they technically are.

Fangames replicate/modify entire Pokemon games and can be played as a substitute instead of the official games which could potentially hurt GF's bottom line (very unlikely).

Showdown on the other hand just simulates one aspect of the games but with low quality sprites and minimal animations. It may even enhance the official games since it can be used to test out strategies quickly before taking them into the official games.

Everytime a fangame gets shut down people are up in arms but then forget that said fangame had a secret Patreon and other shit.

The fucking Mario Royale Guy had his Patreon on the fucking front page, of fucking course Nintendo was going to shut it down
