Fearow indefinitely; it actually LEARNS a flying type move and lvl 20 Evo helps hugely in early-midgame slogs.The pidgey Evo-lines best attack is literally quick attack.
In-game it can actually out-stat dodrio, thanks to the old EV/DV system, and provided you pick up a spearow at the beginning.

Fearow just looked a bit too goofy for me back then. I like it better now but I still prefer Pidgeot out of the two

You can in yellow. Imo dig is the better option and high underrated. Functions better since it can be used in caves/dungeons, pretty much a free escape rope and the bike can get you mostly anywhere in between. Also has 100BP in gen 1 so its effectively a turn 2 earthquake and a ton of pokemon can learn it.
