the exp share in gen one was an absolute nightmare to use

Nah, the games are fucking broken and written by morons who never got better. You have to embrace the jank that makes it so when the enemy uses growl you actually increase your stats or that ditto can crash your game.

There's a hack called Shin Red that patches out all of the glitches (except for the good ones like Missingno and Mew glitch).
One those cobwebs are cleared, Gen 1 is easily the next best Pokemon experience after Gen 2.
