The cards themselves became a collector market with high speculation on it. Think cardboard wildcatting. A pack is an investment for a potential payout of one high value card. People WILL kill over that if desperate enough.

And here I thought the 2020 crunch was bad. What the hell happened this time to make this happen? It seems way more rabid than usual. I'm beginning to think I should just abandon the TCG altogether. Even the Japanese TCG market is getting bad.

Card for card, yes. Baseball cards are pretty much done at this point. Original pokemon TCG cards are more valuable
Singles cards, no. The original cards from the early 1900's are in the tens of millions at this point

I think it was a combination of:

>increase overall interest in Pokemon than before
>increase in attention on the franchise due to the new Legends game
>economic downturn/inflation leading people to try different means of getting money
>increased mentality of turning your hobby into a second job
>investor bros losing money on other avenues like NFTs, sneakers, whatever so this is the next target
>youtubers encouraging the 'yooo I just pulled a $300 card lets gooo'
>people hyped up the Eevee set as being super popular because its focused on Eevee and the evolutions, which are popular
I am sure there are other factors I missed. They all flow into each other. I think once scalpers start getting burned then it'll go back to normal.

sneakerfags got in to the hobby once things started dying down, invoosters and hypefaggots also started coming back when Twilight Masq. came out and wanted to hype up Greninja as the new meme card that worked to a degree so they moved on to trying to hype up surging sparks' Latias ex SIR because they missed out on Latios and Latias GX and needed a copium version of it that sort of worked and then did it again- going all in for Prismatic Evolutions because they missed out on Moonbreon in evolving skies
