As someone who prefers the old school style of games this has been on my mind ever since bdsp released
I'm not even a fan of bdsp as remakes but I've beaten the game more times than any other switch pokemon game because I prefer the gameplay and based on the fact it's sold 15+ million (highest selling remakes) it's clear there's still a market for traditional style pokemon games
2d games are easier to develop and would allow gamefreak to spend more time on their mainline games whilst satisfying the fans and spinning the pokemon marketing wheel
You could have ".5 generational games" which introduce 50-60 new mons+8-12 regional forms in either chibi or sprite based regions to satisfy the fans who prefer the older style gameplay
