I did eventually watch Idolmaster though because I felt like I needed to watch at least one of the big idol shows to get a feel for what's going on. Idolmaster does a good job of portraying the ideal of what idols are supposed to be. Macross SDF ironically shows how broken that kind of person can end up being, though most later series play it totally straight.
