You're walking up a gravel path, flowerbed on one side, chickens on the other. "Welcome home, anon!" You look ahead on the porch and see Riifu sitting enjoying the sun. You smile, and respond with your usual "I'm back, Riifu!" You walk up the stairs and sit down next to Riifu, grabbing her small hand and putting it against your face. "Even though I cannae see you anymore, I still love this feeling." Her hand gently caresses your face as you smile, happy to be back with Riifu.
You then ask, "Would you like to go to the usual spot, and feed the birds?" Riifu brightens up even more, "Of course! You'll get the food?"
"Of course Riifu, give me a second and we can go." after you enter the house, you walk over to the pantry and grab an assortment of nuts. Then you go into the fridge and grab some of the leftover veggies from the garden. When you walk back out you let Riifu know what you've grabbed. "Next time let's boil up some eggs for 'em." she says excitedly. You then grab the handles of her wheelchair and take her down the ramp on the side of the house.
It's a bit of a walk to get to the pasture, but it's Riifu's favorite spot so you'll go whenever she wants. She likes to sit under the big tree in the shade. Once you make it, you lock the wheels on the chair, lean over Riifu and gently slip your hand behind her back. She lifts and wraps her arms around the back of your neck and slightly lifts her legs. You put your other arm under Riifu and raise her from the chair in a practiced motion. You place her by the tree and put her back against the trunk, and grab the food from the chair.
You sit down next to her, and she asks, "Do you see any birds around?" After looking for a few seconds, you reply "No, not yet. Let's wait a while." As you're waiting, an invitingly warm breeze sweeps through the area and the fatigue of the day suddenly hits and you start to nod. Maybe you'll just rest your eyes for a second...
As you open your eyes for some reason you're lying down. You feel that familiar small hand combing through your hair, and occasionally touching your face. "Ah, I'm so sorry, did I wake ya?" As you're about to respond, Riifu speaks up once again. "It's okay, just go back to sleep. I know how hard you've been working the farm every day for my sake. Even though I can't see 'em anymore, I'm sure the flowers are beautiful. It's not like I could get too close to them anyways." She laughed and continued in a softer tone of voice, "We've come so far in so few years. A lot happened really quick, I will always tell you how thankful I am every day."
"You've stayed by my side, and have continued to work the farm. I was afraid we would have to move after I collapsed. I'm happy. I'm so happy this is how I get to spend the rest..."
Riifu's voice starts to waiver, and her hand stopped moving. You finally spoke up, grabbing her hand, "Don't think of the time that's left. I want you laughing, feeding the birds, and always talking about all the things you love."
Riifu responded, "I'm sorry for crying, I want you to be happy as well."
"I'll be happy just to have known you."
