Where to start learning Japanese?

Some of Shion's streams had been soulless for me. Mostly because, I leave it in the background playing. I do enjoy engaging with chat and hearing Shion's voice and laugh, but the language barrier keeps me from having more fun. In addition to that, no one ever live translates for her. Say, where do I start learning Japanese? I am lost and don't know where to start. Sorry for bad engrishu, ESL.

I mean, these are some good translated clips, it's a good nostalgia trip, but all I see nowadays are speedsubbers, that makes a few translated clips for Shion(mostly because lack of streams). I do want to start studying Japanese, mainly because I want to understand the stream more and able to contribute more in the community. I just don't know where to start.

If you want a brainless start into learning Japanese I would recommend downloading the Genki textbook and workbook and just read it cover to cover, doing the practices and workbooks along the way. It comes with a CD, but the sound files can easily be found online.

A lot of people have issues with Genki by the way it introduces grammar points, but on average most people who have attempted to learn Japanese in college used this book.

Do realize you're asking for years and years of work and dedication to get to a level where you barely understand what your favorite chuuba is saying. People who are insane and have that dedication can learn a decent amount of Japanese in probably a year, but realistically most people don't have the time, resources, or motivation.

Seconding this. Genki is good. It gets criticised because a lot of exercises are designed for use in a classroom and are redundant for self-study, but going through the Genki textbooks will get to you N4 level easy.
