A couple of months ago, I walked downstairs one morning to find our beloved rescue cold and dead, being sniffed and accompanied by our much younger husky, after dying in his sleep that night. That dog lived through basically every important period of my life, so seeing him suddenly dead put me into physical pain. Like I was being crushed by a boulder. I still haven't quite gotten around to accepting that he's gone.
