She was used by Melkor the big bad (in both pictures) to destroy the source of light at the time in Arda (Arda being the middle earth world). That first picture shows her eating the tree's. She was promised to have anything she wanted by Melkor and she chose the thing that he wanted most also, some jewels. She was denied the jewels and the other picture is Ungoliant getting mad and about to destroy Melkor but he calls some balrogs to save him. Probably my favorite character in the middle earth universe.

It is all in the Silmarillion but Ungoliant doesn't play a very big part outside of eating the tree's, unfortunately.
