In many societies, a widow whose husband died in battle was very high-status. (Firstly because you want to reward battlefield valour, but also because a widow whose husband died in battle, rather than from disease/old age, is more likely to be younger and still fertile.)
In the early Puritan settlements in New England, it was actually considered very important for a widow (or widower) to remarry as soon as possible. There would be social pressure put on them to do so. (There's quite a good bit about it in Fischer's "Albion's Seed", for example.)
That being so, we want a young, sexy, virtuous widow who is still overwhelmed by grief for her husband but must be WOOED and BROUGHT OUT OF HER SHELL by an ARDENT YOUNG MAN.
