It's a surprisingly difficult subject.
I remember reading https://askubuntu.com/questions/396437/how-can-i-remove-the-gray-scale-page-background-of-a-pdf-document-scan-while-pre and other threads. Tried all the possible solution, and all of them involve too many manual work + abandioned softwares.

The best case scenario is when it's all text and black and white. Good scans, like on ia, will have layers that are already separate the yellow/gray background and the text and the shadows. The separation isn't perfect though. Images and logo will be ruined if you only keep the text layer.
Basically this method, threshold, and others will not produce perfect result.

Just play with the settings in the 'threshold' color tools of Photoshop/GIMP/Paint.NET/pretty much any image editor and you can get something decent pretty quickly.

thanks, I played with the histogram then threshold and got this. I also sharpened a little. Wish there was a way to fill in the gaps of white inside black areas, like the notes, but this is good enough

Using just the image viewer program IRFANVIEW, I did the following:

1. Image Pulldown menu --> convert to grayscale
2. Image Pulldown menu --> decrease color depth 16
3. Image Pulldown menu --> decrease color depth - custom 8
4. Shift U
5. Image Pulldown menu --> decrease color depth - custom 4
6. Image Pulldown menu --> decrease color depth - custom 3
7. Image Pulldown menu --> decrease color depth 2

There were so many steps since I simply "nibbled" my way along experimentally (out of curiousity) without trying to improve the method with fewer steps.

I did this through Google Gemini. It originally changed the fucking timing to 3/2. It might have fucked up other things, too.
