Rather than blaming black people or hispanic people they're careful to pin the blame on for example, Somali or Mexican immigrants, and so they think "they don't mean me, they only mean those immigrants who are causing trouble". So you get people like Jelly who think they're "one of the team" despite being Malaysian and don't find out it's still just about racism in the end until much later, after they've served their purpose.
