>>58278276It's fire and it's not particularly close. I found a "Pokemon species ranked by post count" post on e621 and tallied up the typings of the top 50. Why only top 50? Partly because I'm lazy and partly because I noticed that after 50 there come a lot of Pokemon that really aren't widely thought of as smash fodder - stuff like Garchomp, Ampharos, Audino, Mewoth, and Pichu that most wouldn't generally think of as being a lot of people's first choice. As well as a lot of species that trigger people's loli/shota moral turbulence like Scorbunny and Shinx (though Ralts and Kirlia were just inside the top 50 if you were wondering).
The results:
Fire: 86,075
Psychic: 54,592
Dark: 52,062
Fighting: 43,919
Electric: 36,291
Normal: 35,060
Fairy: 34,515
Steel: 27,878
Water: 22,304
Flying: 17,106
Grass: 16,441
Ice: 13,894
Dragon: 13,829
Rock: 8,012
Poison: 7,640
Ghost: 3,296
Ground and bug goose egg in the top 50, not appearing until 58th and 72nd respectively.
See, while fire's highest ranker in Braixen is only 9th, fire just has a way wider variety of high-tier smashes than the other types, as
>>58278325 alluded to, for a much higher aggregate total. Lots of furrybait mammals covering a broad array of tastes. A lot of other types are carried by only one or two strong lines (Lucario is the only steel representative and it and Riolu are three-quarters of fighting's rep in the top 50. The humanoid fighting baras really aren't THAT popular) and water,
>>58278282 , is actually a notorious under-achiever, being mostly a parade of profoundly un-pomfable poissons. It really only has Vaporeon, Greninja, Buizel, Primarina, Lapras, and maybe Samurott and that's honestly about it. You also might’ve seen the podium meme that points out Vaporeon is only 4th among 'vees. The grass waifumons like Tsareena also do surprisingly poorly. The highest scoring grass types besides Leafeon and weed cat are actually Snivy and Serperior. Surprising yet pleasing to me as a Serperior fanboy.
