A lot of the recommendations in this thread are pretty good e.g. a decent safety razor/stand/brush/blades is only going to run you like 50 bucks and then you'll be spending a fraction of the money on blades for the rest of your life.

An insulated water bottle might be good if you work without ready access to cold water/ice and like cold water to drink. You could either go thermoflask or more like Yeti (though I'd go RTIC or Ozark Trail, cheaper)

A good Swiss army knife or leatherman is practical for everyday use unless you sit behind a desk all day and don't do shit for yourself at home.

Nothing is wrong with Excel, like most software it has its uses. It's when businesses try keeping large data sets in Excel spreadsheets instead of doing the right thing and moving to Sql, then Oracle. At least they have brought up Access

it's tedious and error-prone to audit a sheet or workbook

it's far too easy to edit your raw data (by default, a slip on the keyboard can mutate data and you wouldn't know that it had done this)

instead of presenting raw data, it automatically formats it for you (e.g. dates)

you can have columns with mixed types (?!)

VBA is the worst imaginable way of programmatically interacting with data

an arbitrary limit on the # of rows in a sheet (something like ~1m rows from what i remember)

inflexible and limited graphics with ugly defaults (cf. ggplot2)

most importantly, there's a philosophical problem that underpins almost all of the issues with Excel: there is no clear distinction between data and actions performed on the data (e.g. worksheet functions). you do the calculations on the data in the same 'space' as the data itself. it's intellectually muddled and therefore extremely error-prone. for anything that isn't extremely small in size or that needs to be repeated or audited, it's better to use something like R

the main reason why Excel is used is because there is no learning curve, so idiots can get going with it quickly. but try auditing an idiot's worksheet
