Enki lord of abzu, like you have said have been confused with, hell/sheol, depths of the earth. In reality it is a deification of springs and aquifers. Enki also created man/adamu, like yahweh. Here is where the confusion comes in. Enlil, who's name means lord of wind, is the one who, in ancient sumerian myth, defeats the chaos serpent and brings the flood upon man. Enki has no role in either of these two events beyond informing and saving man, Utnapishtim/ Ziusudra / Noah. Hebrew myth has essentially fused these two dieties in some acts and has made them enemies in others, thus leading to this confusion.
