It's pretty weird hearing people compliment our country.
We do have lots of good things that slip by under the radar (for instance, several new techniques that CURE cancer instead of just treating it's symptoms were developed by our scientists).
The nicest thing I can say is that we have corrupt, but humble politicians. They steal, cheat and get bribed like any other EU country, but ours have the decency of trying to hide it (and we pretend we don't see it) and only steal a few grand each. Much better than other countries.
If anyone else from another country feels like visiting: the tourist traps in the capital (Lisboa) and Porto are pretty, I guess. But it's further into the country, away from major cities that you'll find a beautifull landscape.
If you're American, people will mock you a bit, but it's all in good faith. Portuguese like their stereotypes and laughing about them WITH you. If you get offended and can't take a joke, that's when people give you the cold shoulder.
