Another thing: the concept of speed has changed. In 1980 an acceptable truck cruise speed was 45 mph. In 1990 it was 55 mph. Today people demand their SUVs and trucks handle good at 85 because that's how they drive. This demands stranger proportions, streamlined (compared to earlier models) bodies, and active AWD/ESC. Also disc brakes instead of drums.
Just drive an old truck to see why. Taking an 80s-era truck past 60 on stock suspension and brakes is dangerous as the body will physically shake until it slows down or rolls. Modern trucks can handle 100 easily.
