>>9936822The story starts of with Simon and Kamina being in an underground city, surround by the earth, "enduldged in materialism". As such they were trapped into this underground state by their fear and desire to survive

They then break out of this system, onto the surface and find the many stars where their adventure will lead them to (ascencion) and throughout the story most of the "evil" guys are people that believe Humans are incapable of accomplishing anything great. As such the overseer in the village of Simon and Kamina was the evil guy for trapping them underground and destroying any believe in the surface. The Anti Spirals are beings thinking we cant control the energy with modesty and would destroy everything.
A prevailant theme is also the believe/faith resulting in positive results, and the believe itself (in a better world) being what kicks off the story in the first place, and the lack of believe being the source of evil essentially.
There is also the theme of the Mechas coming down from the sky, and with the talk of the clockwork gnomes during DMT trips spiritual bodies (in example of [fallen] angels) may appear to be metallic
