- the mechs themselves are durable, but there are still vulnerable areas like joints and having some defense is better than none. Even if it only tanks a couple of shots and has to be discarded, it's still worth it. Plus there are things like bazookas and you don't really want to receive a direct hit from one of those. Units that prioritize speed generally don't have shields because it's extra weight and they can just dodge shots.
