The base was a huge front for rebel transports throughout the system. The games tried to make it sound like they were the good guys and give it that beautiful crisp Swiss mountain scenery, but it was basically Kandahar for the Imperials. It was the nerve center for terrorist action throughout the galaxy. Not blowing it up would've been evil.
