>>9181805I've seen the frog thing in many western movies. Seems very cool, if a bit... excessive. A fun way to mess with the icky girls and prove your manliness. We never do that, anywhere that I've seen or heard, at least.
My "experience in biology" comes from owning livestock.
Another story that stuck with me for almost a decade now comes from that.
Me and dad, who was still alive and strong at the time, were butchering a sheep. The usual, catch it, tie a front and a back leg together, slit the throat. It's very exhilarating, even after all this time. I can't even tell whether I feel bad about it. More like.. melancholic. You stand there like an idiot with a dirty knife and a pool of blood. It doesn't make you feel cool or powerful.
Butchering taught me that no matter how dirty your hands get, no matter what stinking entrails you stick them in - the dirt comes off with enough soap. And the smell follows, with enough time.
Anyway, after getting most of the way through skinning it, my father sighs and swears for some reason. We finish skinning and hang it up - to work on the insides and that's when I realize that the sheep had been pregnant.
You don't butcher pregnant stock, obviously. That's just a free extra head. A vet looked at it couple months prior and didn't see it. I was bummed, seeing an extra sack of somewhat formed.. stuff in there, among what I was used to seeing. It was a waste. But the experience stuck firmly in my memory.
